Recap: Spook Your Fears

You belong!

Hi everyone, this is Nakyah 👋🏾!

We just wrapped up Spook Your Fears, and I wanted to share some highlights from our powerful session. This event wasn’t just about Halloween—it was about tackling real fears, owning our journeys, and knowing that it’s okay to stumble and get back up.

From Failure to Comeback

At our Spook Your Fears event, I shared a personal story about my first semester as an engineering student at Virginia Tech. I tell this story to humanize our board members and to remind you that the best of us fail sometimes—but that doesn’t change your worthiness. College is tough, and we all have moments of doubt, but every setback is an opportunity to grow. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember: you are not alone—and you can always get back on track.

Discussion Topics

The Fear of Not Getting an Internship

We know the job search can be stressful, but remember: every rejection is redirection. Preparation and persistence are the keys to success.

APPLY APPLY APPLY!
You are all qualified to land an internship/new grad role—you just need to find the right fit. If you remember the ABB event, rejection from a role doesn’t mean you’re not good enough—it just means it wasn’t the role for you.

It can feel endless, but a mix of applying, skill building, and networking will get you the opportunities you deserve.

💡 Pro tip: Don’t forget—we post internship and job openings regularly in our Slack.

Failing Classes

You are not defined by your grades. College isn’t always smooth sailing, and struggling in a class doesn’t diminish your value. The key is to seek help early, reach out to professors, and lean on campus resources.

💬 Ask the e-board for help—that’s what we’re here for!

Imposter Syndrome

Many of us feel like we don’t belong, but your seat at the table is earned. Keep showing up, building your skills, and trusting in your journey. I feel it every day, and csvt officers feel it too. This is something we all have to work on together.

💡 Reminder: Someone let you into the room for a reason—trust it. You deserve to be here.

Power of Networking

Networking is essential, I literally can’t stress that enough. Networking will take you far. Treat recruiters like people—reach out to those whose work interests you and advocate for yourself.

Don't be afraid to connect with others, even those in your major. If you need help getting started, I will personally coach you. That’s how important this is!
